OUR CHURCH HISTORY

In June, 1976, Rev. Kenneth Smith began a ministry in Mililani as a Pastor/Developer under the support of the Lutheran Church in America. The first worship service took place on Aug 29, 1976 in the choral room of the Mililani High School with 60 in attendance. This location served the worshiping community until the congregation was able to move to Rec. Center #2 for Sunday Services on Sept 24, 1978. In June 1979 Rev Smith left to accept a call to Kelseyville, California. Rev Ragnor Kastman served as interim pastor during the summer of 1979.

Rev. Dale Burke and his wife Barbara arrived on Oct 1, 1979. On Apr 13, 1980, CLC became an official congregation of the Lutheran Church in America. The organizational service was held at the Mililani Presbyterian Church, with 134 persons signing the constituting charter.

On Jan 4, 1981, in the midst of growing attendance, the congregation moved its worship services to Rec Center #3 which served CLC through Sept 1987. Ka Halelana "the Ark", the house next door to Rec. 3, was purchased by LCA and used as CLC's office, meeting space, and gathering place since 1981.

The reality of having a permanent Facility began with a Ground-breaking Service on the church's two acre site on Nov 19, 1986. Construction officially began on Feb 4, 1987. Eight months later the first worship service was held on Oct 4, 1987. The facility was officially dedicated with a Service of Dedication and Luau attended by 600 people on Oct 25, 1987.

On Jan 1,1988, CLC became a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. CLC Preschool first opened in Aug 1988 with 24 children. A second Sunday morning worship service was added beginning on Jan 8, 1989. The first alumnus of our congregation, Roger Snyder, went to seminary at Pacific Lutheran and was ordained on Mar 8, 1987. CLC's first official intern pastor, Dawn Finney, began her year of ministry in Aug 1989.

In 1994, Rev Jim Roessler became CLC's Pastor when Rev Burke left to become Chaplain for Hawaii Pacific University. Rev Jim was joined his wife Joyce and son Aaron. During 1994, CLC started the small group ministries. In 1995, CLC took on full management of its preschool and attendance rose to 48. The first Pet Sunday blessing service was in Jun 1996. In Sep 1996, Aaron Roessler and Gary Ward established the CLC homepage. The first Praise Service was started in early 1996. In Sep 1997, CLC went from a Church Council to a Seven Member Steering Team.

We went back to a church council from a steering team a couple years before Pastor Jim left in 2000. Pastor Richard Zimmerman served as interim pastor from Jan. 2001-Jan. 2002. Pastor Dale Burke was recalled part-time, to be shared with Hawaii Pacific University from Feb. 1, 2002, until we were ready once again to call a full-time pastor in October 2003. Pastor David Kieffer now serves the CLC Ohana.

Christ Lutheran Church continues to grow in numbers and constantly seeks to grow in faith, joy in the Gospel, service and mission to the community and the world.
